Wave Rock is located 296 km (or about four hours drive) east south-east of Perth, in Western Australia and 3 km east of Hyden. Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking wave.
Wave Rock is about 14m high and around 110m long. It has formed on the north side of the solitary hill, which is known as "Hyden Rock".
The rounded shape of the rock happened about 600 million years ago and was formed by weathering and water and wind erosion which has undercut the base and left an overhanging cliff.
Water from the springs that run down the rocks during the wet season, dissolve minerals, which add colour to the wave. In 1960, some crystals in this area were found and dated as being 2700 million years old, which is amongst the oldest in Australia. The curved shape of Wave Rock is highlighted by algae, that has formed vertically on the rock.
